Know the Signs

You've seen the signs. At least some of them. Addiction is an identifiable and treatable disease. By recognizing the signs below in yourself or a loved one, recovery is possible.

Adult Addiction to Drugs or Alcohol

  • Complaints from family members or friends about drinking or drug use
  • Failed attempts to quit or cut back
  • Hiding the evidence of drinking or use. Increasing tolerance of alcohol or other substance
  • Legal charges such as driving while intoxicated or possession of drugs
  • Neglecting responsibilities in order to drink or use
  • Blackouts or memory lapses associated with use
  • Health, job, family life, or financial issues resulting from use
  • Continued use even with negative consequences to health, job, family life, or finances.

Adolescent Addiction to Drugs or Alcohol

  • Deteriorating grades
  • Persistent surly attitude or irritability
  • Disrespect and unwillingness to follow rules
  • Unexplained depletion of liquor or medication supplies
  • Theft from parents or siblings
  • Evidence of "huffing": quick depletion of aerosol products, household cleaners
  • Apparent drunkenness or hangovers
  • Change to negative peers
  • Legal problems including underage drinking
  • Red, irritated eyes
  • Changes in energy levels, appetites, sleep patterns or hygiene
  • Liquor bottles
  • Drug paraphernalia
  • Disappearing for days at a time

  • Unable to cope with stress
  • Persistent grief over loss
  • Destructive behavior like excessive drug or alcohol use or talks of suicide
  • Problems falling or staying asleep
  • Feeling sad more than most of the time
  • Avoiding settings or situations because of previous negative experiences
  • Worrying about things all the time
  • Being unable to relax
  • Difficulties concentrating or with focus
  • Excessive and inappropriate worry
  • Compulsive behavior like gambling or overspending
  • Unexplained irritability, moodiness, anger or loss of emotional control
  • Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness
  • Problems sleeping
  • Persistent feelings of sadness or feeling empty
  • Feeling hopeless and/or pessimistic about the future
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, and/or helplessness
  • Loss of interest in activities or hobbies that were previously pleasurable, including reduced sex drive
  • Fatigue and decreased energy where even small tasks seem to require a great deal of effort
